Reported by: Maite De La Rosa Friday, Oct 17, 2008 @10:59pm CDT A Fort Stockton High School teacher resigned on Wednesday, allegedly after rumors surfaced that she was giving students alcohol. According to a call we received at KMID, 26-year-old Jamie Steen gave some of her students’ beer during an unauthorized field trip. After she tried to reprimand a student for sleeping in class, the student apparently ratted her out. There is currently an ongoing investigation. Steen was a first year agriculture teacher at Fort Stockton High School. Fort Stockton High Principle Gregory Nelson said, “It’s up to the police to determine if they encountered enough to elevate it to the level of charges." Principal Nelson also says teachers and students take a lot of field trips together, but this is the first time an incident like this has happened. Sophomore Ashley Walters told us, “bought beer for her students on a trip, ratted her out, and that's what our teacher told us.” Dana Sparks, a science teacher at the school, says Steen was a caring and outgoing person and that she really knew what she was teaching. Her daughter was in Steen’s class. “She would be more of the one-on-one casual type of teacher. Not what you would call the stricter type,” said Sparks. Superintendent Ronald Mayfield says they always take incidents involving their students and employees very seriously, and they will take the appropriate action. We’re told criminal charges are possible, but nothing has been filed at this time.
