Reported by: Maite De La Rosa Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @11:20pm CST MIDLAND—Lee High’s La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (SHH) paid a special tribute to one of their own officer’s that died last month. Magaly Ibanez, 18, was killed in a horrible car accident, her husband Ariel Jimenez was the driver. Jimenez survived. Ibanez was a public relation officer for SHH. She was supposed to graduate high school this year. Members of the SHH honored her with a special candlelight ceremony, music, and kind words. However, the most touching moment was when an SHH officer read a letter written by Ibanez about being a teenage mother. In the first part of the letter Ibanez wrote about her dreams as a little girl. She wanted to be a firefighter, a doctor, a lawyer or a police officer when she grew up.
“In high school I was the one that followed the rules, did my homework and received good grades, everyone saw me as the good girl," wrote Ibanez in her letter. Ibanez went on to say her dreams changed as she grew up. She wrote about how she met the man of her dreams sophomore year…the guy who later became her husband and the father of her baby boy. "Junior year arrived that year I realized who my true friends were. I never realized how much becoming pregnant would affect me," wrote Ibanez in her letter. Magaly then wrote about how the people she knew as friends turned their back on her, and ignored her. "Of the 6 close girlfriends I had only 2 remained close. They were there for me, they weren’t embarrassed to be seen with me,” wrote Ibanez in her letter. She wrote about people’s doubts about her future and how they told her she wouldn't accomplish anything. "They said my marriage would be destroyed within a year and I would drop out of school no one believed in me," wrote Ibanez in her letter. But, she did achieve something. Ibanez broke the stereotype that every girl that gets pregnant drops out of high school. "I want to prove to my son that even though I'm a teenage mom I'm strong and I don't give up,” wrote Ibanez in her letter. |
