ODESSA -- The City of Odessa has allotted $3 million dollars to drill a test water well in Pecos County.

Members of the Odessa Development Corporation are working on a contract with the city of Fort Stockton to drill a test well in the Capitan Reef Aquifer outside of Fort Stockton.

The City of Fort Stockton recently received approval to drill the well.

If the brackish water from the aquifer -- which is under Pecos and Reeves counties -- can be cleaned enough to be potable, the well should be able to provide 10,000 gallons of water a day to Fort Stockton.

Odessa would then invest in the construction of a pipeline to bring the water to Ector County.

Fort Stockton would also expand its existing desalination plant to be able to handle the increased water intake for both cities.

Since the contract for the well is still being finalized, drilling hasn't begun yet.
