Shark attacks in the U-S reached a new high last year, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File

There were 80 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide in 2012.

53 of those happened in the United States.

That's the highest U-S total since 2000.

Florida led the country with the most shark bites, followed by Hawaii, California and South Carolina and North Carolina.

Overall, the number of people dying from shark attacks is down.

There were seven deaths worldwide last year.

Researchers say surfers have the most frequent shark encounters.
