ODESSA--- The Meals on Wheels program in Odessa is experiencing a very low shortage of volunteers.

"We're struggling" says Wheels on Meals Executive Director, Margaret Burton "we are very very short on volunteers".

Burton says that they need 31 volunteers a day in order to make their rounds on time.  Right now they are barely getting by with the few that show up and Meals on Wheels staff has to make the deliveries.

"Staff is very short, we only have 6 people including myself" says Burton.

Meals on Wheels delivers 450-495 meals a day to West Texans in need.

"It helps me with my wife" says retired Odessan, A.J. Hammond, whose wife of almost 60 years had a major stroke three years ago.  "She can't do anything for herself, so I have to do it" adds Hammond.

Hammond receives lunch that includes meat, potatoes, vegetables, snacks and a drink.  He says that this meal takes them a long way especially with their lack of finances.

Some Odessans have been volunteering at Meals on Wheels for many years and say that the experience has been great for them.

Wesley Creekmore is one retired citizen who come in to Meals on Wheels to deliver food every single day.

"I've been delivering now for about 7 years and I just enjoy doing it" says Creekmore.
