ODESSA -- A small plane lands on an Odessa highway.

Odessa Police say a single-enging airplane landed along U.S. 385 near 87th Street -- near Schlemeyer Field -- around 12:30 PM Friday.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers say the 1950's-model plane was en route from Arizona to Odessa when the pilot realized he wouldn't have enough fuel to make the Schlemeyer Field runway safely.

The pilot reportedly looked for the closest road he could land on safely, informed airport personnel at Schlemeyer Field, and proceeded to land safely on U.S. 385.

Witnesses say the plane dipped under some power lines and barely missed some cars while making the emergency landing.

The pilot and 2 passengers were on board, but no one was hurt.

Troopers say the pilot followed protocol and informed the airport about the landing, so no citation would be written.

Troopers believe the plane's fuel gauge was slightly off, leading the pilot to miscalculate the remaining amount of fuel on the aircraft.

Law enforcement officials had to close U.S. 385 in the area of the landing until the plane was able to be removed from the road.

    U.S. 385 reopened around 2:30 PM Friday.
