ODESSA -- It's the end of an era for Mojo athletics.

Gary Gaines announced his retirement as the Permian head football coach on Tuesday.

Gaines spent a total of 8 seasons as the head coach of the Panthers.

Gaines' first 4 year stint with the Mojo was in the 1980's.

His 1988 season was documented in the best selling book "Friday Night Lights."

In 1989, Gaines he led the Mojo to the Class 5A state title.

Gaines left the Panthers after the championship season.

Gaines would return to Permian in 2009, but the success of the 1980's did not repeat itself.

The Panthers finished with a 23-21 record in the past 4 seasons with only one playoff win.

Gaines' last game with the Mojo was a 34-33 loss to El Paso El Dorado in the first round of the playoffs back in November.

A replacement for Gaines hasn't yet been named.
