A federal report says ExxonMobil's delayed response to a pipeline break made a 2011 oil spill in Montana's Yellowstone River worse.

The Department of Transportation report was obtained by the Wall Street Journal.

The paper reports investigators found oil and gas giant Exxon delayed in shutting down all the valves to a broken pipeline in the river, allowing more oil to spill into the river.

The spill cost an estimated $135 million in cleanup.

The report found flood-induced erosion exposed the pipeline, causing it to break underneath the river.
