A new poll released Sunday shows Americans remain divided on how things are going in the country.

The CNN/O-R-C International survey indicates a definite split remains as President Barack Obama begins his second term in office.

49-percent of people saying things are going very or fairly well is up six points from last November and more than double the 21 percent when asked at the time of President Obama's first inauguration in 2009.

On the flip side, that leaves 51-percent saying things are going pretty or very badly.

Polling experts say no president has ever faced a people in such a sour mood since the question was first asked nearly 40 years ago.

The poll has a sampling error of plus or minus three-point-five percent.
