The family of of former linebacker Junior Seau is suing the NFL over the player's suicide.

The 43-year-old Seau shot himself in the chest last year in the bedroom of his Oceanside, California home.

The National Institutes of Health later determined he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

That's a brain disease that can follow multiple hits to the head, like those sustained in football.

The lawsuit accuses the N-F-L and helmet manufacturer Riddell of wrongful death, but doesn't specify a figure for damages.

The NFL could not be reached for comment.

Riddell issued a statement saying it has not yet seen the lawsuit and that it wasn't appropriate to comment on pending litigation, but it stands behind its products.
