More American soldiers died of suicide than in combat last year.

The Pentagon says there were 325 confirmed or potential suicides among active-duty and non-active Army personnel in 20-12 -- an average of almost one death per day, and a record-high number.

Army officials say total military deaths in Afghanistan for the year were 313.

The Army's deputy chief of staff, Lieutenant General Howard Bromberg, says the Army "continues to take aggressive measures" to prevent suicide and help soldiers and officers suffering mental trauma.
