JEFF DAVIS COUNTY -- In 2011, the largest fire in recorded Texas history burned in the Davis Mountains for weeks.

Now, the Texas Forest Service is trying to make sure that residents are safe from future wildfires.

Texas firefighters started removing vegetation from roads near the Davis Mountain Resort on Monday.

Crews used chainsaws and other hand tools to created a shaded fuel break along the roads.

Firefighters say that if the sides of the roads are cleared of vegetation and other fire fuels, blazes won't block the roads (which serve as evacuation routes for the Davis Mountain Resort).

The Davis Mountain Resort -- which is located near Fort Davis -- has been affected by multiple large wildfires in recent years.

In particular, the Rock House Fire burned more than 315,000 acres of mountain land in Jeff Davis and Presidio Counties (including land in the Davis Mountain Resort) in 2011.

More recently, the Livermore Ranch Fire torched more than 23,000 acres near the Davis Mountain Resort in May 2012.
