MIDLAND -- Some say basketball is a game of runs. If that's the case, the Midland College Lady Chaps hope their current run lasts a while.

"We basically kind of found ourselves in the regional tournament," said sophomore guard Megan Braeuer.

After splitting the WJCAC conference title with South Plains and New Mexico, Midland shared nothing once they hit the Region Five Tournament The Lady Chaps beat three nationally ranked teams to eventually walk away with the Region Five Championship.

"Basically, our character showed. All three games we fought," said Braeuer. "We always started down. We never gave up, so I think that's going to help us a lot."

Midland found itself trailing in both the first round and championship game of the Region Five Tournament, but persevered to climb back and win. That's something this team has pride itself on all year.

"We had a lot of ups and downs this season," said conference MVP Achiri Ade. "We've experienced getting blown out at the beginning of the season to fighting when we need to win.
I think we have a lot of experience coming into the national tournament, and we're really prepared for this and we're excited."

This will be the sixth national tournament in 19 years for head coach Ron Jones. That's quite an achievement for the coach, but for him, it's about the players."

"That's the first thing that went through my mind, was how happy I was that they're going to get to experience a national tournament," said Jones. "That's pretty much what I thought about more than anything else."

Experiencing the national stage is one thing, winning on it, is a whole other achievement. And that's something this team wants more than anything.

"We won regionals, and we're happy about that," said Ade. "But at the same time, we're trying to win a national championship, and that's what really is important."
