MIDLAND -- The Hispanic Cultural Center of Midland proudly announces its' X Annual Mariachi Workshop & Competition. For the last 9 years HCCMidland has provided the workshop to all students in mastering the art of Mariachi. The 3 day workshop focuses on perfecting their music, style and encourages the heart in continuing this beautiful culture. Last year the competition phase was introduced and was a big hit. Mariachi Juvenil Juarez CBTIS 128 was our first winners of the Competition and performed before Mariachi Tenampa at our "Noche de Mariachi Concert". The Showcase and Competition are free and we invite everyone to attend. The Competition begins at 7:00pm. On Friday, at Midland High School Auditorium the "Noche de Mariachi Concert" will begin at 7:00pm. The concert will showcase all the students who participated in the workshop and will end with the Mariachi de Estrella (a group made up of students from the workshop). The concert prices are $5.00 and children 6 and under are free.
The workshop will be instructed by Mariachi Tenampa from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Cost is $75 per student; $100 for directors.
Workshops will be on instruments used for Mariachi groups: violin, guitar, trumpet, vihuela and guitarron. Student must be able to read sheet music and bring their own instrument. Voice workshops will be provided for participants. Workshops are for grades 5 through college level.
