CARLSBAD, NM -- A Carlsbad, NM man dies after crashing into an irrigation canal.

The fatal crash occurred in an irrigation canal about half a mile south of Lea Street in Carlsbad late on March 19th.

Carlsbad Police say that Steven R. Reese was driving south on a dirt road near the canal when he lost control of his 1996 Ford Explorer.

Reese, 26, overcorrected his vehicle, which flopped over twice before landing on the driver's side in the canal.

Reese was apparently pinned in the vehicle, and he reportedly died from his injuries 8 to 12 hours before officers found the vehicle.

Officers reportedly found Reese's body and the vehicle around 10:20 AM Wednesday.

Officers say Reese wasn't wearing his seat belt, and alcohol was a factor in the wreck.

There are no signs of alcohol being involved in the wreck.

Police say that someone removed a battery and two of the tires and wheels from the Ford Explorer overnight.

Anyone with information on this incident should call Carlsbad Police at (575) 885-2111 or Eddy County Crimestoppers at (575) 887-1888.
