Marfa I.S.D. To Cut Positions

Updated: December 28, 2012
MARFA -- Some Marfa I.S.D. teachers will soon be out of a job.

According to The Big Bend Sentinel, Marfa I.S.D. has decided to eliminate 6 to 8 teacher positions and two noncertified paraprofessional positions by the end of the school year.

The district has decided to downsize because its income can't support the current staff size.

Marfa I.S.D will be using a resignation incentive program to allow teachers and staff to leave voluntarily.

Teachers who commit by February 15th to leave their position will receive 5 percent of their total annual salary as incentive.

Noncertified paraprofessionals -- including teacher aides, cafeteria workers and custodial staff -- who agree to leave their position by February 15th will be offered a $1,000 incentive.

Paraprofessionals who agree by February 15th to leave their position by the end of the school year will be offered a $500 incentive.

Marfa I.S.D. officials believe the incentive program is a better system for downsizing than cutting high-income employees, or employees low on a probationary scale.

District officials like the plan since it incorporates existing voluntary departures that tend to occur annually with a percentage of the district's staff and faculty.
