A 16 member panel formed after the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting will have its first meeting this week.

Connecticut governor Dannel Malloy announced The Sandy Hook Advisory Commission will convene Thursday.

During that first meeting, the group will get updates on the shooting investigation and hear presentations from experts involved in the aftermath of the Columbine and Virginia Tech tragedies.

The group, chaired by Hamden, Connecticut Mayor Scott Jackson, includes public safety and mental health experts.

Their goal is to come up with recommendations on school safety, mental health and gun violence prevention.

The group's initial report is due by March 15.
