AT&T Aims To Stop Texting While Driving

AUSTIN-- AT&T representative Leslie Ward says the cell phone provider is on a mission to end texting while driving.
"We've put a lot of resources into it," explained Ward. "We're very committed to this effort to ensure the safety of our customers."
AT&T says you're 23 times more likely to crash if you're texting behind the wheel.
This overwhelming statistic is one of many reasons the company was in Austin supporting the Alex Brown Memorial Act.
"We're just very excited to be here at the capitol," said Ward. "And really appreciate Representative Craddick for sponsoring this important legislation, to get the message out there."
If passed, the bill will make it illegal to text and drive in the state of Texas.
"There's a lot of people that believe they can text and drive and it not impact them," stated Ward.
To make the experience of texting while driving more realistic, AT&T set up a texting while driving simulator.
The machine allows both supporters and no supporters of the bill the chance to text behind the wheel.
"I think it's one of those things that once they see the simulator, they understand how important this is as a public safety," said Ward.
After experiencing the simulator people are encouraged to take part in a nationwide pledge to not text and drive.
"Go to itcanwait.com, take the pledge that says you pledge not to text and drive," said Ward. "And please encourage your family and friends to do that, because you don't want them to be in an accident as well."
