BIG SPRING -- Monday marked the five year anniversary of a massive explosion at ALON Refinery in Big Spring.

The blast sent massive clouds of black smoke into the sky.

Crews had to shut down Interstate 20 in the area as well.

Amazingly, no one was killed in the blast, although several people were injured.

The refinery had a reduced staff due to the President's Day holiday when the explosion ripped through the facility.

The reduced staff likely led to fewer injuries from the incident than would have been likely on other days.

In the years following the blast, a series of lawsuits that accuse ALON U.S.A. of negligence have been filed.
