Republicans are urging President Obama to approve construction of the northern leg of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline.

That's the part of the pipeline that crosses the US--Canada border.

The administration rejected a permit for the line a year ago because an alternate route through Nebraska was still undecided.

That state's governor has since approved a new route.

President Obama fast-tracked the southern portion of the 17-hundred-mile pipeline last March, which runs from Oklahoma to the Gulf.

The pipeline would bring oil from Canada's tar sands in Alberta down to the Gulf of Mexico for refining and processing.

Republicans say the Keystone project would boost the U-S economy and ultimately help reduce the federal debt.

Opponents call it a dirty and dangerous pipeline that will cause environmental damage.
