President Obama had lunch with a former campaign rival yesterday at the White House.

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan sat down with the president and Democratic Representative Chris Van Hollen.

Van Hollen is the ranking member on the budget committee.

Ryan, who was the Republican vice presidential nominee in the last election, thanked the president for hosting what he called a frank discussion about Washington's budget challenges.

He's expected to introduce specific proposals in his budget on Tuesday.

A White House official said the group's lunch was constructive.

In case you're wondering, they ate lentil vegetable soup and broiled sea bass served with a roasted vegetable ragu.
