Teen Uses His Experience To Spread Diabetes Awareness

Its the start of baseball season and Nicholas is getting ready, playing catch with his younger brother. It's a normal activity for a boy his age, but Nicholas has a few more things on his mind.
"I have to check my blood eight minimum twelve maximum times a day," said Simmons. "And that has a small little needle in it. And every three days I to put this nine millimeter needle on my pump into my stomach and I have to rotate sides."
In the past eight years Nicholas has grown up fast, taking control of his diabetes.
“He is more mature," said Nicholas' mother Rosie Simmons. "He has matured throughout the years with this condition." .
Now, Nicholas is using his expertise to help others. This will be his second year as the spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association.
His message to others?
"Really just to take care of yourself," said Simmons. "Really check your blood as often as you need to." Said Nicholas Simmons.
As the ambassador, Nicholas has been on the interview circuit and an active participant of many diabetes walks.
"This year we walked around the duck pond out there," said Simmons. "And its to raise money for a cure for diabetes.”
Nicholas' mother thinks her son is doing a great job.
"He is a people person," said Rosie Simmons. 'He likes to talk and he is not afraid to talk about diabetes and what's happening to his body. He is no different from any other child."
