BIG SPRING -- The City of Big Spring is responding to a proposal that would lead to term limits for city council members.

A concerned citizens group has raised enough signatures to put term limits on the May ballot. The Big Spring City Attorney says that if this measure passes, current council members would be eligible to run for two more terms after their current term expires. But she also warns that others may have a problem with that system.

The city attorney also adds that another part of the proposal -- which requires council members to step down if running for another office -- is against the Texas Constitution. Because of this, that portion of the proposal could not be enforced.
