MISD Approves Controversial Sex Ed Program

Midland-

The pregnancy problem at M-I-S-D has been a problem for a long time. And it's getting worse. How to solve that problem was an even bigger issue. Now M-I-S-D has finally come up with a decision.

After two and a half hours, the school board finally came to a decision. They approved a new sex-ed program that will be compromised of three parts; the abstinence plus sex education program called "Its your game, keep it real", the Life Center's sexual integrity for life, and Midland and Odessa Area Aids.

"I think to say that we have a comprehensive program that will spans multiple grades with very age appropriate information will make that impact we need to see. " Said Dr. Ryder Warren, Superintendent of MISD.

But the abstinence plus part of the new program, which would focus on abstinence but also offer information on birth control and protection, was met with opposition.

"We would be foolish to think that is not going to arouse curiosity. We come from original sin, we will fall. Why tempt those of this age?" Said Mike Banschbach, a citizen concerned about the new program.

But the school board along with the student health advisory committee believes something needs to be done. And they believe abstinence plus is the best way to lower the pregnancy rate.

"The plus is just that, its provides an added component. Its scientifically and accurately correct." Said Fred Behnken, a member of SHAC.

The three part program will be offered to the seventh and eighth graders enrolled in Midland's ISD. All students will be given a choice of opting out, should their parents object to that material.
