ODESSA -- The Communities In Schools program has been in the Permian Basin since 1999. It's designed to help students who are at risk of dropping out of school.

However, this program was one of the victims of recent budget cuts in E.C.I.S.D. Now they're scrambling to find funding, before it's too late.

Until the recent budget cuts, the program received $107,000 from E.C.I.S.D. Now, that money lost means a lot less money for the 6 schools that offer the program in E.C.I.S.D. That, in turn, means fewer activities to help students improve their academics, attendance, and behavior.

"The main worry would be for my students," said campus coordinator at Crockett Jr. High Robyn Hernandez. "I would worry what they would do without such a program. And the main worry is that the program may not sustain itself and remain in the district."

You can help Communities In Schools of the Permian Basin by donating to them directly. Or you can purchase tickets to their luncheon for $20. Just call (432) 332-0757.
