MIDLAND -- Dry, windy weather has been in the Permian Basin this week -- and so have the grass fires.

Crews had their hands full battling a large blaze near Greenwood Thursday afternoon. The blaze broke out just around 1:50 PM Thursday east of the intersection of East County Road 160 and F.M.1379. The blaze was small initially, but winds spread it quickly, and it crossed East County Road 160.

Fire units from Midland, Northeast Midland County, Greenwood, Odessa, and Martin County were out fighting the blaze. The Texas Forest Service sent an air attack, two single engine air tankers, bulldozers and engines to help those crews. Crews also closed East County Road 160 a few miles east of TX 158 as they battled the fire.

The fire is now 90 percent contained, but it's burned 1400 acres so far. A barn was damaged and power lines were compromised, but other structures have not been affected.

Big 2 has gotten some reports of residents losing power south of Midland. Crews are looking to restore power to those areas, but we don't know when exactly power will be restored.
