FORT DAVIS --  The situation in Fort Davis was still tense Monday, as people started making their way back to town.

Many residents discovered that their homes are destroyed by the Rock House fire. The Fort Davis I.S.D. schools were closed Monday. Schools will remain closed through Tuesday because of the number of families that have been affected by the fire.

The fire has now burned well more than 80,000 acres, and the total acreage could be as much at 100,000 acres. The fire is only 40 percent contained. The blaze has stretched all the way from where it started in Marfa towards Balmorhea. The fire has also destroyed 27 homes and businesses in Fort Davis as well as one home at its source in Marfa.

Texas Forest Service resources remain on scene, along with state and local fire resources. Crews have been spraying fire retardant as they try and get the blaze contained.

The blaze has also closed several roads in the area. TX 17 was closed Monday between Fort Davis and Balmorhea because of the fire. Crews expect that road to be shut down until at least Wednesday. TX 118 was also closed between Fort Davis and Alpine on Monday.
