The Cannon Fire broke out Sunday night near the Pecos-Terrell line, after a round of lightning hit that area. Volunteer fire crews from McCamey, Rankin and Crane were battling flames along R.M. 2886 southeast of Bakersfield on Monday. The Texas Forest Service was assisting those crews.
Wind helped spread the blaze Tuesday, and officials in Fort Stockton tell Big 2 that the fire was burning out of control. Smoke from the blaze was visible as far away as Midland and Odessa.
TXDOT closed Interstate 10 between mile markers 294 in Bakersfield and 326 near Sheffield for several hours Tuesday afternoon, as the flames crossed the highway at mile marker 314. Traffic was rerouted through McCamey and Iraan on F.M. 11, U.S. 67 and TX 349. The highway has now been re-opened. Drivers should be careful, since there is a lot of smoke in the area.
TXDOT has closed off R.M. 2886 south of Interstate 10.
