In early April,5th and 8th graders took their first round of TAKS reading and math tests.  In
ECISD,  79%  of 5th-graders passed the reading test compared to 82%  last year.  In terms of
math, 78%  passed compared to 81  in 2010.

For ECISD 8th graders, 82% passed the reading test compared to 88%  a year ago while 64%
passed in math compared to 71%  in 2010.

"Our teachers and students worked hard during the year to prepare for TAKS," said Dr. H.T.
Sanchez. "We have already assigned extra intervention and support to our schools that have
an above average number of students who did not pass."

Fifth-and-8th-graders are part of the Student Success Initiative (SSI) which means any
students who failed  the first round of reading and math tests in April will be  re-tested on
May 17 &  18. Any students who also fail  the second assessment are required to attend
summer school for  that subject and take the TAKS  test for a third time in late June.
