You can Help Stamp Out Hunger This Saturday

MIDLAND -- On Saturday, letter carriers will kick-off the nation's largest, single-day food drive to help stamp out hunger.
Here in West Texas, the one-day food drive will take place in Odessa, Midland, Pecos, Monahans, Big Spring, Andrews, Ft. Stockton, Alpine, and Ft. Davis.
Nation-wide, Americans have donated more than one billion pounds of food over the past 18 years during the Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
In these difficult economic times the need for food assistance has never been greater. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture, the number of Americans living in food insecure homes increased to more than 50 million in 2009. Perhaps most alarming, of this total, nearly one in three is a child.
This year organizers hope to exceed last year's record-setting total of 77.1 million pounds of donated food nation-wide.
Every home in America is encouraged to help by simply leaving a bag of non-perishable food items like soup, canned vegetables and fruits, pasta, cereal or rice, near their mailbox. The letter carriers will do the rest.
All food donations will be given to the West Texas Food Bank and will say local.
