Midland Celebrates National Police Memorial Week

MIDLAND -- The Midland Police Department will host the annual Peace Officer's Memorial Service in connection with Law Enforcement Week.  The public is encouraged to attend.

 The service is scheduled for Thursday, May 19, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. outside the new Midland County Courthouse.

 Congressman Mike Conaway will be the guest speaker at this year's service.

 The service honors law enforcement officers who have lost their lives protecting their communities. 

 Eighteen Texas Peace Officers died in the line of duty from May 1, 2010 - April 30, 2011.  They are: Officer Eydelmen Mani, Houston PD, Border Patrol Agent Mark Van Doren, US Department of Homeland Security, Officer Craig Shaw, Lancaster PD, Officer Leonard Reed, Cedar Park PD, Corrections Officer Kellie Pena, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Corporal David Slaton, Texas Department of Public Safety, Patrolman Karl McDonough, El Paso PD, Deputy Odell McDuffie Jr., Liberty County Sheriff's Office, Officer Sergio Antillon, San Antonio PD, Trooper Jonathan McDonald, Texas Department of Public Safety, Officer Andrew Rameas, Harker Heights PD, Deputy Michael Schaefer, Uvalde County Sheriff's Office, Officer Jillian Smith, Arlington PD, Deputy John Norsworthy, Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office, Officer Kevin Marceau, Dallas PD, Officer Stephanie Brown, San Antonio PD, Deputy Robert Britton, Smith County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Sherri Jones, Bowie County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Clifton Taylor, Johnson County Sheriff's Office

 Also being remembered are three Midland Police Department officers who died in the line of duty.  John Wyrick, 10-10-35, Brian Scoggins, 4-14-61, and Gordon Smith, Jr., 11-28-61.  Wyrick was shot while on patrol. Scoggins died while working motorcycle patrol.  Smith was killed by a murder suspect.

 Representatives from several area law enforcement agencies will participate in the service.
