Common Cents: Hiring AC Service Companies

The power of air conditioning is not something anyone in Texas can afford to take for granted, especially during the summer months. However, not everyone takes the time to plan what they'd do in the event that their home AC unit breaks down.

In today's Common Cents segment, Trish Powell from the BBB discusses a few tips to consider when in need of urgent AC repair or just preparing ahead with AC servicing.

Tips to consider when hiring AC service companies -

         Research Company Background and Licensing. Be sure to review the BBB Business Review of any AC service company you plan to hire, to find out their reputation and if they have any history of complaints, and also to find out if they are accredited.  Be sure they are licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which will be already confirmed if they are accredited.

         Compare Prices and Service Packages. Get at least two estimates for the AC repair or maintenance work. All bids should be in writing and should provide a full description of the services to be provided and the materials to be used. Consider using BBB Request a Quote to get estimates from BBB Accredited Businesses. Also, be sure to ask if companies provide ongoing (annual or quarterly) service packages and how those prices compare to one-time visits.

         Review Warranty Coverage. Find out if the company offers any type of warranty or guarantee on their maintenance visit, and make certain you understand the terms and conditions of the coverage. Also, be sure to check the warranty on your actual AC unit to see whether any repairs or replacements are covered for a specific period of time. Remember that some AC units come with long-term warranties, but may be impacted with homeownership changes or renovations.

         Ask About Energy Efficiency. Many new AC units are manufactured to be significantly more energy efficient than others, which often qualifies these products as tax deductions. Ask your contractor if they have experience installing and servicing energy efficient units and which units are tax deductible, if you're planning to be able to file this on your taxes.
