Since January, there have been 23 accidents at the Cargo Road crossing with the most recent being on July 4th. This new evidence swayed commissioners to change there January ruling of keeping it open and close the crossing for good. And with no public comments against there decision, commissioners told Big 2 that this time around, it was a no-brainer.
"But I think with the number of accidents truly you have to look at whats the interest of the public, what makes us a safer county to live in," said Ector County Judge Susan Redford. "And I think this time it was just an easy decision for us to make."
This decision by the county comes after a long debate between Penatek Industries CEO Jim Reese, whose company relied on that intersection. Reese says he now worries that the heavy traffic flow will just be re-directed to another intersection. Reese believes Union Pacific has just shifted liability onto the county. Either way, the intersection has been shut down.
