MIDLAND -- A hero's homecoming is scheduled Thursday afternoon, to honor the Midland Marine who died over the weekend.
2nd Lt. Patrick Wayland, 24, died on Saturday.
Wayland was taking part in a Marine training exercise in Pensacola, Florida on August 1, when military officials say he went into cardiac arrest. He was rushed to a local hospital, but it was too late. Doctors pronounced him brain dead on Friday.
His family made the decision to take him off life support over the weekend, and elected to donate his organs.
While his death is still being investigated, his body is on its way home.
A honor procession is planned for Wayland this afternoon.
We're told his body will arrive home to the Midland International Airport at 2:45.
The honor procession will take his remains to the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home on Big Spring Street.
