The investigation began when police arrested Dustin Allen Horton and charged him with murder in July. Officers say Horton confessed killing a homeless man, but they couldn't identify the victim at the time.
Police still don't know the homeless man's name, but they say he was originally from Michigan. Police add that he was trying to get back to his family there.
Officers say the victim was between 60 and 70 years old and he was homeless. He had a below the knee prosthetic on his left leg and used crutches.
Police also say the man was often seen around convenience stores in Fort Stockton.
