This K9 officer can sniff out tobacco and even cell phones. This unusual pup's unique skills are proving to be valuable for police officers.
Baxy can pick up the scent of a cell phone, which can be used by inmates to hide dangerous information from the law. Anything from hits being ordered or drugs deal information.
Attempted hits like the one on now retired TPD Homicide Sgt. Mike Huff and District Attorney Tim Harris. Court records show accused murderers on another crime used smuggled cell phones in the jail to plan the hits.
Cell phones are a way for inmates to communicate without the police listening to what they are saying. Its a way to intimidate witnesses and plan possible escapes.
This is why it's crucial to have Baxy in the jail, she can find a phone in just one minute. No other dog in the state is used to find cell phones in prisons or jails.
Baxy can even find tobacco, which is often used to barter or traded for favors.
So Baxy will be used where visitors check in especially the restrooms. Police have found a lot of items in the trash can or toilet rolls, hidden for when inmates or inmate crew comes by and can hide it in their sock. Even officers are known to smuggle items. So Baxy will make her rounds throughout the jail even in closets.
