On November 9th, 1989 the Berlin Wall was torn down. The barrier separated democratic West Berlin from Communist controlled East Berlin and the rest of East Germany.
It was built to stop millions of East Germans from escaping into the West, in order to save the economy on the verge of collapse.
Between 1965 and 1989, more than 100,000 tried to get over the wall. Of those about two hundred were killed. Up to 10,000 actually succeeded.
