Launching Anvils as a Way to Remember Veterans

By: Stephanie Castillo
Updated: November 14, 2011
HAMILTON -- The small Texas town of Hamilton has a very loud and unique Veteran's Day tradition.

Hamilton residents shoot off anvils at the American Legion Post to honor past and present Veterans.

The tradition started in 1918 after WWI, as a way of informing the entire town the war was over. The town blacksmith used the anvil to make noise after the telegram saying the war ended came through.

This Veterans Day was the 94th consecutive year of shooting off the anvils. Anyone who wanted to launch an anvil was given the chance this weekend --up until they ran out of gunpowder.
