Presidio County Constable Charged With Car Theft

MARFA -- A Presidio County official finds himself on the wrong side of the law.

The Big Bend Sentinel reports that Presidio County Constable Juan Lara Jr. was arrested last week.

Authorities say Lara repossessed a Marfa man's 1997 Chrysler New Yorker on June 22nd -- even though the rightful owner never agreed to sign over the car's title to Lara.

The car was later towed to El Paso.

Now, Lara is charged with one count of felony theft of a vehicle. He's was recently released from the Brewster County Jail in Alpine on $2,000 bond.

Lara was first elected to the Presidio County Constable position in 1997. He's running for re-election in 2012.
