MIDLAND -- Add Midland County to the firework-free zones in West Texas for the New Year's holiday.

This week, Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst extended Midland County's disaster declaration through the holiday season.

The extension means that no one can sell or shoot off fireworks in Midland County for the remainder of 2011 -- including New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Midland County officials requested the extension due to the region's extreme drought. Officials were worried that falling firework particles could ignite grass fires across the region -- as they landed on parched vegetation.

Ector County also banned fireworks through New Year's Day this week.
