Surviving the Holidays Without Looking Like Santa

As Christmas approaches some people are watching the bathroom scales and seeing their weight inch up.

Adults gain an average of one pound between Thanksgiving and New Year's, research shows. Sedentary people actually put on 1 pounds, while those who are more active lose 1 pounds, the study showed.

It's not too late to do damage control. "Make sure to add in plenty of enjoyable seasonal activities to burn off some indulgent holiday calories," says Dawn Jackson Blatner, a nutrition blogger on yourlife.usatoday.com and author of The Flexitarian Diet.

She tallied the calories in some favorite holiday treats, then calculated how much activity it would take for a 180-pound person to burn off those calories.

*Chocolate fudge (3 ounces, a 2-inch cube) - 370 calories
Activity: Walk briskly for an hour.
*Peanut brittle (1.5 ounces) - 207 calories
Activity: Run for 15 minutes at 6 miles per hour.
*Iced sugar cookies (Three medium one-ounce cookies with icing) - 530 calories.
