What got social media users clicking, sharing, tweeting, and buzzing in 2011?

Apparently, a teen with a ridiculously catchy song. Aspiring songstress Rebecca Black and her video "Friday" topped the list of YouTube's most watched videos and Google's fastest rising searches this year, whether you loved or hated that, you couldn't get it out of your head.

On Twitter, a singer with a much longer resume pushed August's MTV Music Video Awards to the top. With the debut of Beyonce's baby bump, the show generated more tweets per second than any other event of the year.

How to tell what was on the minds of Facebook's 800 million users in 2011? Look no further than their status updates. The year's most chatted about event, the death of Osama bin Laden in May.

And with most lists dominated by people and personalities, the top search item on Yahoo, had never really spoken a word, until October. Ahead of its latest release, iPhone topped Yahoo's list, as people scoured for information on the rumored iPhone 5.

And that's what had people talking in 2011.
