The "New York Times" reports Senators John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina while at a news conference in Kabul, Afghanistan, spoke out strongly in support of arming Syrian rebels.
Their thoughts come amid the Syrian government continuing its deadly crackdown on its own people.
McCain and Graham sit on the Senate Armed Services Committee and they both say rebel fighters deserve to be armed so they can battle the Syrian government.
The senators believe that would help Washington's efforts to weaken Iran because Syria depends on Iran for military and financial support.
McCain said he believes "there are ways to get weapons to the opposition without direct United States involvement." Graham suggested to reporters at a news conference that "breaking Syria apart from Iran could be as important to containing a nuclear Iran as sanctions."
