Economy Slows US Population Growth

By: Big 2 News Staff
Updated: February 20, 2012
It now costs about $14,000 a year to raise each child in a middle-class, two-parent family.

That's according to the latest statistics from the Department of Agriculture.

So, it makes sense that in a tough economy, Americans are having fewer children.

A USA Today report says the average woman in the United States now has only 1.9 children.

That's not even enough to replace the dying population.

Demographic experts tell USA Today the number of births probably will rise again, once the economy has rebounded completely.
