ODESSA -- A new movie focusing on the deadly violence that has enveloped Mexico will be playing in the Permian Basin later this week.

"Murder Capital of the World" will open Friday (February 24th) at the Hollywood Theaters in Odessa.

The movie focuses in Ciudad Juarez in 2011. The movie also previews the 2012 Mexican presidential election and looks at the overall violence in Mexico -- where tens of thousands of people have been murdered since Mexican president Felipe Calderon declared war on the drug cartels in 2006.

This is director Charlie Minn's second movie about the violence in Mexico -- which is now so bad in all 31 states that U.S. officials have issued their most dire travel warnings ever for American tourists planning on heading south of the border.

Minn's previous film -- "8 Murders a Day" -- played for 3 weeks in Odessa last August. That movie focused on the violence in Juarez.

With the recent disappearance of three Ector County men in Ojinaga, Minn feels this movie is particularly pertinent in the Permian Basin.

"I think bringing it here is important because there's a lot of Mexican influence in this area and what's going right now on south of the border is beyond comprehension," Minn told Big 2. "It's hit Ector County with the three men disappearing. Hopefully, they'll have a safe return very shortly."

The movie will play for at least a week in Odessa, but possibly longer.
