BIG SPRING -- Howard County and Big Spring law enforcement agencies broke ground on a new Troy M. Hogue Law Enforcement Center in Big Spring Wednesday.

When construction is finished in about 8 months, the new facility will house both the Big Spring Police Department and the Howard County Sheriff's Office.

Both agencies will share the jail at the facility. They're also building administrative offices at the site.

"We've been trying to get something like this done in this community for a long time and now the realities," Howard County Sheriff Stan Parker told Big 2. "We broke ground on the building [Wednesday], and the building is underway."

"It gives us the space that we needed," added Big Spring Police Chief Lonnie Smith. "It will give our people the room to work so we are able to provide a better service to the community."

The parents of trooper Troy Hogue were at the groundbreaking ceremony. Hogue was killed during a traffic stop -- when he was shot while trying to make a drunk driving arrest.

The new law enforcement center is named in Hogue's honor.
