Interim Redistricting Maps Released For Texas

By: Shelby Levins
Updated: February 28, 2012
AUSTIN -- New interim redistricting maps have been approved for the Lone Star State -- and lawmakers say they reflect the intent of the Texas Legislature.

The temporary redistricting maps were approved on Tuesday. As of Tuesday evening, Texas' primary elections -- using the interim redistricting maps -- were scheduled for May 29th.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott says the new maps are a substantial improvement over the maps previously issued by a federal court in San Antonio.

The United States Supreme Court ruled that the previous maps -- which were drawn by federal judges -- overstepped their boundaries.

The newest maps will be used for United States congressional districts, the Texas Senate and Texas State House districts.

Unless the new maps are appealed, they will be used for the remainder of 2012 -- including the November elections.
