MIDLAND -- TXDOT is expanding a major highway north of Midland.

Construction crews with Jones Brothers Paving and Construction will break ground on the TX 349 expansion project in northern Martin County later this month.

Workers will expand a 9.5 mile stretch of TX 349 north of TX 176 from a two-lane road to a four lane divided highway.

Construction crews will work from north to south in 2-mile increments.

The speed limit will be 45 miles an hour in the work zone, and the road will be narrowed to 11 feet for each lane for the time being.

TXDOT is waiting on bids to expand another 40 miles or so of TX 349 between Midland and Lamesa.
