It's a statistic that can strike fear in the heart of any parent: Each year an estimated 66 young athletes suffer from sudden cardiac death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But the good news is many of the deaths can be prevented through heart screenings. Midland Memorial Hospital is, once again, hosting a championship hearts foundation screening in conjunction with the Texas Chapter of the American College of Cardiology.

The event will be held saturday, july 14th from 9:00-1:30p.M. At the Midland Memorial main campus , Illinois lobby. The screening includes a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ecg) And a limited 2-d echocardiogram, a combo that can detect hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in athletes in the united states. High school athletes, ages 14-18, can sign up for the free screening with the permission of their parents.

Help prevent sudden cardiac death in high school student athletes. Register for this free, non-invasive screening, by logging onto midland-memorial.com and click on championships hearts foundation logo.
