MONAHANS -- A Monahans hotel that came under fire for mistreating an injured veteran is taking steps to make sure no other ugly incidents ever occur between staff and guests.

The Best Western in Monahans got national attention on August 6th, when a clerk reportedly laughed at injured Staff Sgt. Chad Staples when he asked for help getting down the stairs during a power outage.

Staples reportedly had to throw his wheelchair down the stairs and crawl down after it.

Best Western fired the clerk after the incident, but Monahans city leaders are now taking more steps to keep a similar incident from happening in any Monahans hotels.

Officials with the Monahans Chamber of Commerce say that they've met with the Best Western's owner and general manager to set up a customer service policy that benefits both the hotel and Monahans.

A representative from the Texas Hotel-Motel Lodging Association also flew in from Austin to give all Monahans hotel owners a customer training seminar.
